Safely into the Unknown? A review of the proposals for the future of English Heritage

On the 26th June 2013, plans were announced to split English Heritage - public body responsible for protection of England’s historic environment—into two separate organisations. In December Department Culture, Media, and Sport released a consultation document outlining proposed changed justifications them in greater detail. Under statutory duties toward heritage that currently fulfils will remain under government auspices, while management its 400+ properties be spun off into self-funded charitable company by 2023. This paper lays out these changes as clearly possible, considers their feasibility, speculates on effects they could have Heritage, it serves, wider sector, both England UK.
